« Michal Rehacek (sms programmer): As you may have noticed from various posts onthis forum, we have been working on a launcher for the game. Its first release is now almost ready and Friday’s build (junior+) will be using it.

The process of downloading new builds will be changed (and simplified). From now on, you will only need to download the small launcher. The launcher will then take care of downloading the actual game builds and patches needed to run the highest build your account is enabled for. Most importantly, you will not have to download new launcher every time a new build is released; the launcher will automatically detect new builds as they are released. The launcher also has the ability to patch itself, should we find any problems with it. All of this will happen automatically.

The launcher will be made available through the Download link tomorrow. Before downloading the new launcher, I recommend manually uninstalling any old builds. This is a one-time operation only, aimed to make sure the launcher will not see any old builds incompatible with the launcher.

You will need to download the launcher installer and install it to your usual pCARS directory. The launcher installer will automatically launch the launcher itself. The launcher will ask for your forum username and password, and then will automatically download one or more builds or launcher that are needed to update the game to the latest version your account is enabled for. Once the game is updated, the launcher will allow you to launch the game.

Running the game will be accomplished exclusively through the launcher. The icon to run the game has disappeared, so use the Launcher icon. The launcher will give you the option to choose between DX9 and DX11 mode, and if you pass some other command-line arguments to the launcher, the launcher will pass them to the game.

The launcher will download builds to Documents\CARS\Patches directory. It supports resume. If you want to download the patches manually (e.g. via torrent), you can put them into this directory and the launcher will pick them up without redownloading them. The launcher supports HTTP only (no torrent) for now, so we’re not really sure whether or not our server is going to evaporate when everyone starts downloading the builds.

It will still be possible to install the builds and run the game manually, like before. This will however only be a compability option now, to be used as a workaround for possible patcher problems.

There are a few known issues which will be looked at soon:

  • Downloaded builds are never deleted by the launcher. I will implement some kind of deletion of patches that are no longer needed
  • Add ability to set download directory.
  • Incorrect version number shown in the welcome screen of the launcher installer, and no game version shown in the launcher itself. I will be adding installed version information to the launcher window.
  • The UI is not exactly nice, though it’s functional.
  • Support for torrent downloads will be looked at.

The launcher logs all its actions to %TMP%\CARS_Patch_Log.txt. If you encounter any problems with the launcher, please attach this file (or its relevant part) to forum posts about the problem.

In the near future, we will also change the logic of patches upgrade paths. Until now, we made a full build once a month, and then each patch was a cumulative patch of all changes since the last full build. With the automatic launcher taking care of patch download, we will be able to move to a system of much smaller patches, which will depend on each other. This will significantly reduce the size of downloads needed for those who install most builds.

As always, feedback is welcome!«
